After your root canal

What to expect in the days after treatment, and how to help the tooth heal.

What is normal

Mild to moderate discomfort is normal after a root canal, especially when chewing. It comes from the healing response at the root ends and where the injection was given.

Depending on the condition of the tooth before treatment, healing can take several weeks, and sometimes longer. Please be patient while it settles.

What to do

  • Take the prescribed painkillers as the doctor advised.
  • While your mouth is numb, take care not to bite or burn your lip or cheek.
  • Eat softer food for the first few days and avoid hot food.
  • Keep brushing and flossing as usual.
  • Get your final crown or filling done on time. Delaying it is a common reason root canals fail.
